Thanksgiving Day 2008 : Day After Thanksgiving

Day After Thanksgiving

The day after the Thanksgiving Day on the fourth Thursday in November is popularly believed to be the biggest and the busiest shopping day of the year in the United States. The festive mood that starts with the Thanksgiving Day continues throughout December because the intense crowds begin their Christmas shopping from this day afterwards.

The day after Thanksgiving is the day when millions of the people of the United States enjoy a rare Friday off after celebrating the Thanksgiving Day. Taking the advantage of this off they get sufficient time to head for the shopping malls in their cities to start their shopping for the Christmas season.

The day after the Thanksgiving Day, that is the fourth Friday in November, is known as the 'Black Friday' in the retail industry in the United States. Because on this day all the retailers hope that their sales figures will move out of the red and into the black. Therefore for almost all the retailers in the United States the day after Thanksgiving has very special significance.

According to the International Council of Shopping centers, the day after Thanksgiving is not the busiest shopping day of the year in the United States.

Their records disclose that it is the Saturday before the 'Christmas' when the last-minute shoppers hit the stores and make this day the busiest shopping day of the year. The highest sales day is usually either the last Saturday before Christmas or December 23.

They figure that the 'Black Friday' generally ends up ranking as the fifth biggest shopping day of the year, behind the four days comprising the two weekends before Christmas. The day after the Thanksgiving Day is considered one of the busiest days in terms of traffic but not in terms of sales or the dollars spent by the public.
